Is Pilates For Everyone?
Is Pilates for everyone? Most certainly! I feel Pilates exercises can be beneficial to all walks of life. Over the course of 15 years of teaching Pilates, I have witnessed many students improve their daily lives through ongoing matwork and/or Pilates equipment work, including my own.The wonderful aspect of Pilates is its adaptability to an individual’s needs. Joseph Pilates developed his method training soldiers and even the injured ones detained in bed. He believed through specific movements, correct posture and breathing, one could heal and become stronger. Since the 1920’s when Joseph Pilates brought his method to the United States, our knowledge on exercise science has expanded immensely with a deeper understanding of how the body works. We have also learned ways to modify exercises to better accommodate the variety of physical limitations individuals may have.Pilates has numerous benefits that can apply to anyone. Aside from strengthening one’s core, Pilates provides more efficient movement patterns, which prevents injury. It will increase one’s flexibility and mobility creating long, lean muscles for stability. Pilates can also correct muscular imbalances, expand one’s breathing capacity, improve balance and coordination. Furthermore, Pilates is a refreshing body-mind exercise making one more acutely aware of one’s body and breathing leaving one feeling energized. If you have never tried a Pilates class, maybe now is the time to regain that core strength and stability you have been trying to obtain. Pilates goes deeper than those repetitive crunches you’ve been doing. Now in the prime of your wisdom years, why not take care of your vessel and venture out of your comfort zone and try something new.
