How to Budget for Travel Without Guilt: A Simple Plan for Women Who Want More Adventures

Why So Many Women Believe They Can’t Afford to Travel

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I’d love to travel, but I just don’t have the money”?

You’re not alone.

For many women, especially those navigating a new season of life after divorce, loss, retirement, or other major transitions, travel feels like a luxury reserved for “someday.” Yet often the issue isn’t a lack of money—it’s a lack of clarity around where the money is going.

That’s exactly what financial coaches Vanessa and Shayna of Budget Besties shared during a recent conversation on the Solo Travel Adventures podcast.

Their message was simple:

Most people don’t actually know whether they can afford travel because they’ve never truly looked at their numbers.

The Problem Isn’t Travel—It’s Not Having a Plan

One of the biggest misconceptions about budgeting is that it’s restrictive.

Many people hear the word “budget” and immediately think:

  • No fun
  • No restaurants
  • No vacations
  • No freedom

But Vanessa and Shayna approach budgeting differently.

Instead of asking, “What should I cut?” they ask:

“What brings you joy, and how can your money support that?”

For many women, travel ranks high on that list.

Whether it’s a family vacation, a solo adventure, a bucket-list destination, or a restorative weekend getaway, travel often represents something much deeper than a trip. It represents freedom, growth, connection, healing, and new experiences.

The goal isn’t to eliminate joy from your budget.

The goal is to organize your money so you can say yes to what matters most.

Why Waiting Until Retirement Can Be Risky

One part of our conversation struck a particularly personal chord.

Many women postpone travel until retirement, assuming they’ll finally have the time and resources to enjoy life later.

But later isn’t guaranteed.

Health challenges, family responsibilities, and unexpected life circumstances can dramatically change what’s possible.

Travel doesn’t have to mean expensive luxury vacations.

It can mean intentionally creating opportunities for experiences now, while you’re able to fully enjoy them.

The open road doesn’t always wait for the perfect moment.

Sometimes the most meaningful adventures happen when we decide to stop postponing what matters.

Replace Budget Shame With Travel Goals

One of the most powerful ideas Vanessa and Shayna shared was that budgeting isn’t really about tracking every dollar.

It’s about giving every dollar a purpose.

Rather than creating a generic savings account, they encourage women to create specific savings buckets.

Imagine opening your banking app and seeing accounts labeled:

  • Italy Adventure
  • National Parks Road Trip
  • Scotland 2027
  • Solo Travel Fund
  • Greece Vacation

Even if you’re only contributing a small amount each month, something shifts.

You’re no longer wishing.

You’re preparing.

And preparation creates momentum.

A Travel Savings Bucket Changes Everything

One of the simplest action steps from the episode was this:

Open a separate savings account and name it after your next trip.

Not “Savings.”

Not “Emergency Fund.”

Something specific.

Something inspiring.

Something that reminds you why you’re saving.

Then start small.

Maybe it’s:

  • $25 per paycheck
  • $50 per month
  • $100 whenever you can

The amount matters far less than creating the habit.

Every contribution becomes a vote for the future you want.

Why Cash Travel Feels Different

Many travelers have experienced the emotional hangover that comes from returning home with a large credit card balance.

The memories are wonderful.

The debt is not.

Vanessa and Shayna advocate for paying for travel with money you’ve already saved rather than borrowing from your future.

When your trip is funded in advance:

  • You enjoy it more.
  • You experience less stress.
  • You return home without financial regret.
  • You know exactly what you’ve allocated for the experience.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is freedom.

You Don’t Need to Be Good at Math

One of my favorite reminders from our conversation was this:

Most people aren’t bad with money. They were simply never taught how to manage it.

Many women carry unnecessary shame around finances.

But learning a budgeting system is no different than learning any other skill.

You don’t need to be naturally gifted.

You simply need a process.

Once you have one, confidence often follows.

A New Way to Think About Your Travel Dreams

What if the answer isn’t “I can’t afford to travel”?

What if the better question is:

“How can I start creating space for travel in my life?”

Even small steps matter.

A dedicated savings account.

A monthly contribution.

A realistic plan.

A shift from guilt to intention.

Those small actions become the steady path that eventually leads to a boarding pass, a new destination, and a story you’ll be glad you lived.

A Gentle Coaching Invitation

Many women I work with aren’t just planning trips—they’re rebuilding confidence, rediscovering themselves, and learning to create meaningful experiences after a difficult season.

Travel can become a beautiful tool for perspective, courage, and renewal.
