Empty Nest After 50: How Solo Travel Helps You Rediscover Your Next Chapter

Have you ever thought of your life as a story?

A story filled with chapters…
some beautiful, some hard…
some you wish you could rewrite.

And now, you may be standing at the edge of a new chapter.

One where things feel… different.

Quieter.

When Your Identity Has Been Tied to Others

For many women, especially mothers, life has been centered around:

  • Raising children
  • Supporting a family
  • Showing up for everyone else

And somewhere along the way…

You may have lost a piece of your own story.

Cheryl shares from her own experience that after becoming an empty nester, she realized how much of her identity had been wrapped up in her children’s lives.

And when that season shifts…

It can feel like you’re not quite sure who you are anymore.

This Is Not an Ending—It’s an Opening

It’s easy to see this season as something lost.

But what if it’s actually something opening?

A blank page.
A new storyline.
A chance to rediscover yourself.

Start by Remembering Who You Were

One of the most powerful ways to reconnect with yourself is simple:

Go back.

Think about who you were as a child.

  • What did you love?
  • What brought you joy?
  • What felt natural to you?

Those parts of you didn’t disappear.

They’ve just been waiting.

Rewriting Your Story—With Intention

Imagine your life as a book or a movie.

Now ask yourself:

  • Who are the main characters in your life right now?
  • What conflicts are you facing?
  • What do you want the next chapter to look like?

Because you are not just living your story…

You are writing it.

Rediscovering Joy Through Simple Activities

Sometimes, rediscovery doesn’t start with a big trip.

It starts small.

Try this:

Make a list of 20 activities that bring you joy.

Then ask:

  • When was the last time I did this?
  • Have I ever done this before?

This exercise often reveals how much we’ve set aside.

And how much is still waiting to be reclaimed.

How Travel Fits Into Your New Chapter

Once you begin reconnecting with yourself…

Travel becomes more meaningful.

It’s no longer just about going somewhere.

It becomes about:

  • Exploring your interests
  • Reclaiming forgotten passions
  • Creating experiences that reflect who you are now

Maybe that looks like:

  • Visiting a place tied to something you love
  • Trying a new activity in a new location
  • Creating space to reflect and listen

Travel becomes part of your story—not just an escape from it.

You Get to Choose What Comes Next

This season may feel uncertain.

But it is also full of possibility.

You get to decide:

  • What you bring forward
  • What you leave behind
  • Who you are becoming

And that’s a powerful place to be.

A Gentle Invitation

What if this season isn’t about losing something…

but about finding yourself again?

Not all at once.
Not perfectly.

But step by step.

If you’re in this transition and aren’t sure what your next chapter looks like, this is something Cheryl supports women with in 1:1 coaching—helping you uncover what you truly want and how travel can support that journey.
