My Journey To A Triathlon
When I was 25 years old, I had a desire to participate in a triathlon. I started training with a friend and we had set our sights on a summer event in Pittsburgh; however that event was cancelled. Now in my forties and probably in the worst shape of my life, I have decided to revive that dream and go for it. Having declared 2016 the year of adventure and not waiting on that "someday", it made this idea a perfect goal to work towards. For the month of January, I built a base and determined where my weak areas might be through workouts specific to running, biking and swimming. In the fall I had participated in a few 5k races which I believe help set a foundation for the running segment. I have always enjoyed cycling so being on the bike felt good but still challenging. The swimming segment and training will be the most challenging for me. I definitely need to correct my swimming technique.I will participate in a Sprint Triathlon which is a 500 meter swim, 11 mile bike and a 5k run. So I have chosen a race date of April 17th which only allows 10 weeks of training. Now that I have publicly announced it, there is no backing down now.I hope you will follow me on this blog as I post my progress, challenges and training regiment. I have never done this before and find the resources to guide you on triathlon training is vast yet mainly geared towards Ironman races and a whole year of prep. Can I be ready in 10 weeks? We will see. My main goal in doing this race is to simply finish and to learn, grow and obtain some of my athleticism back in the process. It's not about the end game but rather the journey you took to get there. As Karen Lamb said "A year from now you may wish you started today"
